ABOUT MUD

Created primarily to support the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival (Bali) and Adelaide Writers’ Week, MUD LITERARY CLUB Inc. is a private initiative to bring together South Australians who share a love of literature, an affection for Bali and are not averse to having fun, usually food and wine related.

Janet De Neefe

The Ubud Writers & Readers Festival was created in 2004 by Janet De Neefe, a prominent Ubud-based Australian restaurant owner, instigator of the world-renowned Casa Luna Cooking School, and author of ‘Fragrant Rice’, the best-selling story of her life in Bali, and ‘Bali: The Food of My Island Home’ featuring Balinese recipes with evocative imagery of the island paradise.

Adelaide Writers’ Week is revered internationally and is the last great free literature festival of its type in the world. Presented as part of the Adelaide Festival of Arts in Adelaide’s Pioneer Women’s Memorial Garden, this is now an annual event.

As corporate sponsor support is proving difficult to secure in today’s tough economic climate, MUD LITERARY CLUB was formed to provide ongoing support funding to both these events, to ensure the quality & influence of such worthy literary festivals is maintained.

Since its inception in 2012, MUD Literary Club has sponsored more than 20 authors at Adelaide Writers Week and the annual Ubud Writers and Readers Festival in Bali, totaling almost $100,000 in contributions. The achievements of these writers includes winning the Nobel Peace Prize, several Man Booker Prizes, Miles Franklin Prizes, Stella Prizes and scores more. The full list of our MUD Mates and their achievements is listed on a separate page in this website.

Significantly, MUD’s membership is growing, its fundraising functions are becoming more popular, and the group’s ambition is to provide even more literary assistance to ensure the continued success of these crucial literary festivals and the flourishing of great Australian literary talent.
